Transgender Healthcare: Changing Perspectives

Greater awareness about the existence of trangender and gender creative (non binary) persons has resulted in new challenges for transgender (and gender transgressive) persons and those providing healthcare services to trans.

Too few healthcare professionals have been trained to competently treat trans, standards of care are moving to models based upon informed consent rather than requirements (e.g gatekeeping/real life test), healthcare systems have been slow to adapt, and activism in the LGBTQ+ community has resulted in cultural backlash in some countries.

The presenter Erica Anderson, herself a clinical psychologist and transgender woman, has been on both sides of these issues (as a healthcare provider and patient). She seeks to educate professionals and empower consumers ( patients). She will address these issues and where we can go from here.

Transgender and Gender Creative Children and Adolescents

Greater recognition of the spectrum of gender has resulted in challenges to recognize and affirm gender creativity and expression in childhood and teenage years and to support more inclusive gender expression and the development of gender identity for everyone. The speaker Erica Anderson is a clinical psychologist and expert in the recognition, evaluation, and support of transgender children and their families. She practices the Gender Affirmative Model of work with trans at the Child and Adolescent Gender Clinic in Pediatric Endocrinology at the University of California at San Francisco, one of the world’s leading centers of excellence for such care. She is also herself a transgender woman.
